World Cup races

by | Feb 12, 2015

We have just come back from the St Moritz World Cup finals, where we had a very good week of racing. There were 2 x GS and 2 x Slalom races to do and the snow was looking great.
Jen and I had not skied together since before Christmas, we only had one day to gel together again and get ready to start the following day.
We were lucky enough to have our newly appointed performance director, Duncan Freshwater out with us as the rest of the team were over in the USA. Duncan was our support in St Moritz and It was great getting to know him. He is going to be such an asset to the Team…lucky us.
On day 1 we won our first World Cup GS. It was a small field but good competition from the American Team- Danelle and Rob Umstead.
Day 2 was also GS, we won this as well which then put us at the top of the WC GS leader board and so we won the crystal globe.
Day 3 was the first of 2 slalom, I had a wobbly day and was lacking confidence before the start. I had not trained since before Christmas due to School commitments and it was showing, so I went into the race with the wrong head on. I skied cautiously and lost some seconds on the course on the first run. I then got myself in a tizz and didn’t ski well in the second run, my confidence was all over the place. We managed a second place.
After a chat with Duncan, a hard talk from Mum and a Trans Atlantic counselling session from Coach Euan via FaceTime I felt a lot better. The Team back up, in times of trouble, is amazing..thank you everyone who helped me get over my Wednesday blip.
Day 4 was a lot better, it was a tricky course and icy conditions. Another Slalom, another win but a joint first with Danella and Rob Umstead. We got the exact split time…who better to share first with than the lovely Umsteads.
We also came second in the overall WC title and received another splendid medal…what a week!
To top the week it was great to bump into our old Coach Tony who is now coaching the USA team.
A week at school then on to Canada for The world Championships in Panorama.

Thank you to my sponsors

Recovering from yet another concussion had undoubtedly taken its toll, physically, mentally, and particularly on our progress on skis and training.
